Journey of Faith, Growth, and Purpose
When I (Kevin R, '88) reflect on my journey, I鈥檓 reminded of the truth in Proverbs 16:9: 鈥淚n their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.鈥 My story of coming to 蜜桃传媒 is a testament to God鈥檚 guidance and provision.
I grew up in a non-Christian home in the Chicago area. It was at Lake Geneva Youth Camp that I first heard the gospel, and earlier in high school, I surrendered my life to Christ. At the time, I was surrounded by a culture that didn鈥檛 nurture my faith鈥 no Christian friends, no gospel preaching church, and lingering influences of a drug culture I was trying to escape.

The idea of going to college was never part of my plan. I didn鈥檛 see myself as someone who needed more education for a career. My future felt directionless until one pivotal summer when I was preparing to join the Air Force.
That summer, I was spending time at camp, enjoying the time off. I met a tall guy with a great jump shot on the basketball court鈥擠on Dunkerton. Our casual conversation turned into something life-changing. He asked me a question I had never seriously considered: 鈥淗ave you ever thought about studying the Bible?鈥
I don鈥檛 remember my exact response, but the seed was planted. What followed was nothing short of Divine orchestration. One day I was thinking of a future in the military, and the next, I was enrolling at what is now 蜜桃传媒.
When I shared this decision with my family, who were not believers at the time, their reaction was skeptical. 鈥淲hy?鈥 they asked. Today, they acknowledge that it was one of the best decisions of my life.
Starting at Emmaus wasn鈥檛 without challenges. One of my first classes was New Testament Survey, taught by Paul Flint. After class, he called me to his office having noticed that I had brought a paraphrased Bible for serious study. He quickly discerned that academics weren鈥檛 my strong suit. Mr. Flint provided me with a Scofield Reference Bible, a resource that became invaluable in my early studies. I still have it, filled with notes, as a reminder of the Lord鈥檚 guidance in my life.
Beyond academics, Emmaus shaped me in ways that have stayed with me throughout my life. I learned:
- How to study and learn.
- How to listen and sympathize.
- How to follow and to lead.
- When to speak and when to stay silent.
These lessons came not only in the classroom but also on the basketball court. While I wasn鈥檛 a star player, being part of the team taught me about teamwork, trust, and perseverance鈥攙alues that extend far beyond sports.
Today, I work as a large construction account underwriter for Cincinnati Insurance Company. My Emmaus training benefits me daily in my career, especially in areas like communication, problem-solving, and understanding others.
As a parent, I鈥檝e also had the privilege of seeing Emmaus鈥 impact on my two children who attended 蜜桃传媒. Watching their growth under the influence of the faculty, staff, and student body has deepened my appreciation for the Emmaus community.
Emmaus continues to be a blessing in my life. It strengthened my walk with Christ, prepared me for church leadership, and laid a foundation for success in my career. Most importantly, it instilled in me a desire to seek God鈥檚 kingdom above all else.
As Matthew 6:33 reminds us, 鈥淪eek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.鈥 My time at Emmaus was a living demonstration of that promise鈥攁 place where faith, education, and community came together to transform my life. At Emmaus, I found purpose, direction, and a deeper relationship with Christ.
